Three Emmy Awards for FARGO!

Nomadic Pictures has been knocking it out of the park! This year the Calgary company launched Klondike, an original miniseries for the Discovery Channel, starring Richard Madden (Game of Thrones), Tim Roth and Abbie Cornish. Season IV of Hell On Wheels returned in August and now the team as three Emmys to add to their collection for the TV series of FARGO.

Rogers Development Fund Winners Announced

Rogers Media and The Alberta Media Production Industries Association (AMPIA) announced today the second round of successful applicants of the Rogers Development Fund, a newly created development initiative that benefits local production communities. Ten candidates overall were successful, five candidates in Stream One, and five candidates in Stream Two. The successful applicants are as follows:

“Once again, we are pleased to help develop original content in the provinces of Alberta and Manitoba,” said Bill Evans, Executive Director, Alberta Media Production Industries Association (AMPIA).

The Rogers Development Fund is a revolving loan program which provides funding to support the independent producers of Alberta and Manitoba in the creation of new and innovative projects in television, film, and digital media. The Rogers Development Fund is available to individual Canadian producers or production companies who have been residents of Alberta or Manitoba for at least one year.

The Rogers Development Fund is governed by a committee of Canadian media industry leaders who determine the successful applicants. The third round of the Fund will begin accepting loan applications on February 3, 2014.

Upstart Calgary September 30 – December 2, 2013

Upstart is an Alberta based film and television talent development program presented by AMPIA, Jonathan Joffe Pictures, funded through Alberta Film, Telefilm and SAIT, and coordinated by Calgary actor Karen Ryan. Now in its 14th term in Calgary, over 240 Upstart participants have performed in hundreds of scenes which have been shot and edited for the review of everyone involved.

The program brings together local actors, writers, and directors to perform simple scene studies for the camera which are shot and edited for the review of everyone involved.

Calgary’s Upstart sessions will be held on Monday evenings from 6:30 – 10:00 pm at SAIT, room MD 212 beginning Monday, September 30 (no classes Thanksgiving and Remembrance Day).  The program will run for 8 weeks.  The group will shoot 16 scene studies, rotating the participants through a variety of actor/director/writer combinations. Two scenes are filmed per week, those scenes are then edited for viewing the following week. Directors will direct 4 out of 8 nights and Actors will act in all 8 scenes.

Auditions/interviews* will be held at SAIT on the evening of Monday, September 9, 2013Please contact calgaryupstart@gmail.com to arrange an audition/interview time.  Actors, please send a copy of your resume and head-shot as well.

What a whirlwind! It seemed like every corner you rounded in Banff, a pitch was being thrown at a broadcaster, a writer was talking to a producer, or you were struggling to remember a name from last night’s “networking” party…like the AMPIA 40th Anniversary Party!
