Gil Cardinal Legacy Fund

Launched in 2016, the Gil Cardinal Legacy Fund is awarded each year to an emerging Indigenous filmmaker toward the preparation of a professional demo or ‘sizzle reel’ to help a project in development.

In addition to his groundbreaking work as a writer and director, including the 1987 NFB documentary Foster Child and the television series Blackstone, Gil personally took part in outlining the criteria for this award before his passing in 2015. A Gemini winner and David Billington Award recipient, Gil Cardinal often tackled intensely personal subjects, a quality shared by previous fund recipients Heather Hatch (2016), Daniel Foreman (2017) and Sean Smith (2019).

A grant valued at $2,500 will be awarded each year to a filmmaker developing a feature film, short film, documentary, web, mobile or television project. To be eligible, an applicant for the fund must be an emerging Indigenous producer or director who has resided in Alberta for the past two years.

Upcoming deadlines and other details to be announced.
