Dale Phillips, David Billington Recipient

The 26th Annual David Billington Award & Luncheon took place on November 15, 2014 at the Westin Hotel in Edmonton. This year’s recipient was Dale Phillips (aka “Big Daddy”), an award-winning Director and Producer and a former President of AMPIA. The event brought out some of the biggest names in our industry and welcomed the next generation of graduating students into the fold.

AMPIA hosted a pre-reception for graduating students to practice their networking skills and meet the influential members of the film and television industry. Students from Red Deer College and NAIT’s Digital Media & IT Program had the opportunity to meet with the Producers of Alberta’s hit series, such as Hell On Wheels, Heartland, Blackstone and Tiny Plastic Men. Also in attendance: Edmonton-Calder MLA David Eggen, Jeff Brinton from Alberta Culture & Tourism, Edmonton Film Commissioner Brad Stromberg and Calgary Film Commissioner Luke Azevedo.

Award-winning filmmaker Francis Damberger acted as Master of Ceremonies and made quite the entrance in his cowboy boots! After the streaker at the 2014 Alberta Film & Television Awards, there seems to be a “liberal dress code” in effect.

Speakers included Harvey Spak, Selwyn Jacob and Glenn Rollans. Dale was given a few surprises from his peers, including a viewing of his cameo appearance in the feature film Road to Saddle River.

Guests got to hear first-hand how Dale’s leadership, vision and dedication to fostering a sound relationship with Government created a rich legacy that all in our industry have benefited from. Read more about Dale Phillips here.
