Highlights from the Edmonton Short Film Festival

The Edmonton Short Film Festival took place from October 1-2 with over 500 people in attendance. The festival included a special Master Class presented by Roger G. Sherman – a Tony, Emmy and Peabody-award winning and Oscar-nominated filmmaker – who shared techniques on shooting a film on your mobile device.

The Red Carpet Gala showcased several of Alberta’s leading filmmakers, including Adam ScorgieTito GuillenBen Babchishin, and Justin Brunelle.

Congrats to the following AMPIA members who were honoured with top awards for their short films: Aaron Talbot for Plight: A Comic Book Rock Opera – Best Web Episode, Directed by Randy Brososky (feature image above), Geraldine Carr for Voila – Best Dramatic Short Film and Doug Cook – Burning All the Past Away – Best Animation/Experimental.

AFA’s 25 Influential Alberta Artists Announced

Alberta filmmakers were listed among the AFA’s 25 Influential Alberta Artists announced this week. The list was compiled from community nominations to identify artists from the past 25 years who have significantly impacted their communities, influenced the development of art and artistic practice in our province, and inspired others to do the same.

The list includes AMPIA’s David Billington Recipient Gil Cardinal, Media Artist and AMAAS Executive Director Sharon Stevens, Calgary Filmmaker Gary Burns, Co-Founders of Making Treaty 7 Cultural Society Narcisse Blood and Michael Green, and Edmonton Filmmaker/Musician Trevor Anderson.
