Fil Fraser: A History of the Rosies

By AB Film & TV Awards

AMPIA celebrates 43 years of the Alberta Film & Television Awards, aka The Rosies.  Few people know Alberta lead the way to establish the first film and television awards ceremony in Canada and it all started with Fil Fraser.

Fil Fraser is an award-winning filmmaker, journalist, writer and human rights activist with an impressive career spanning more than half a century. Born in Montreal, Fraser headed west at the height of his career in the media industry, a time where he says, “you couldn’t turn on the radio or TV without seeing me there.” He was a Co-Anchor for CBC Edmonton’s news and public affairs program, the host of Talk Back – the most highly rated talk show on CJCA – from 1974-1979 and hosted his own program on ITV, The Fil Fraser Show.

The Alberta Film & Television Awards were founded in 1974 as a result of Fil Fraser’s conversation with Minister of Culture Horst Schmid. Fil shares on that experience and the very unique sculpture that became the first Rosie Award…

ROSIES: Celebrating Women in the Industry

By AB Film & TV Awards

The theme of the 2017 Rosie Awards and Gala will celebrate women in Alberta’s film, television and media industry. Throughout the evening, segments on Alberta’s past, present and future contributors will be showcased, with a video montage of women in their element, behind the camera and on the screen!

“Since the day AMPIA was founded women have played a critical role within the entire industry at both the provincial and federal level. I couldn’t be more pleased that this year’s Rosie Awards will be a celebration of those pioneers and their contemporary trailblazers who continue to shape our industry as content creators, role models and leaders.”
– Michael Jorgensen, Chair of the AMPIA Executive Board

This year will be the 43rd celebration of the Alberta Film & Television Awards, hosted by award-winning actress Michelle Thrush. Tickets are open to the public and will be released after the Rosie Nominees are announced on Tuesday, March 28.

We are excited to announce that award-winning comedian, Jebb Fink will be hosting The Rosies Gala and 42nd Alberta Film & Television Awards!

Jebb has spent the last 32 years performing comedy across North America and internationally on various cruise lines. Jebb has hosted CBC’s  Just for Laughs  “All Access Pass” and has been a writer and performer with the Just for Laughs Festival, as well as for the Winnipeg Comedy Festival.  It is hard not to recognize Jebb from his eight years co-hosting the A-Channel’s “Big Breakfast” or as the host of City TV’s “Your City”.  We are delighted to have Jebb join us for The Rosies this year.
