Immersive Experience Designer Ed Lantz Coming to Story Summit

AMPIA is pleased to welcome entertainment technology engineer Ed Lantz as a presenter at this year’s STORY SUMMIT (February 23-26, The Banff Centre). Ed Lantz is the President and/CTO of Vortex Immersion Media, a Los Angeles company that develops large-scale immersive 360 theatres, mobile projection domes and live, interactive programming including branded immersive media experience for companies like Nike, Microsoft, Nickelodeon and musical acts like Skrillex and Diplo.

Ed has published numerous articles in journals and trade publications on immersive media and virtual reality, is a public speaker on panels and keynote talks including at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and is a regular contributor to ACM/SIGGRAPH. Ed’s personal focus is on the unique cognitive properties of next-generation multisensory “sentient” environments, the merging of virtual and real storytelling worlds, and the development of fulldome theaters as next-generation entertainment and performance venues. Ed holds two U.S. patents on immersive theater technologies, was awarded a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering with minor in Quantum Physics and Electromagnetics from Tennessee Tech University, and is a founder of the trade association IMERSA.

Ed will be joining presenters Kim Hsu Guise (TELUS) and VICE Media’s Patrick McGuire and Nina Sudra to discuss and demonstrate innovative approaches in virtual reality and audience experience.

The 2017 Nominees for the Canadian Screen Awards have been announced this morning at simultaneous press conferences in Toronto and Montreal. Here are the highlights of our Albertan nominees!

Television

  • Congrats to SEVEN24 Films for several nominations for Wynonna Earp, including: Best Achievement in Make-Up, Best Costume Design, Best Original Score, Best Visual Effects, and Best Writing in a Dramatic Series.
  • Prairie Dog Film + Television received 3 performance nominations for the series Blackstone, honouring actors Eric Schweig, Carmen Moore, and Julian Black Antelope.
  • Global Edmonton News at 6 is nominated for both Best Local Newscast and Best News Special (Fort McMurray Wildfire Evacuation).
  • Daryl McIntyre is nominated for Best News Anchor, Local – CTV News Edmonton.
  • Calgary Writer/Actor Andrew Phung is nominated for Best Performance in a Comedy Series (Kim’s Convenience).

Digital Media

  • Spotlight Productions has received two nominations for Queer Hutterite, including Best Original Program or Series produced for Digital Media – Non- Fiction and Best Direction by Laura O’ Grady. The series is produced by Blair Miller, Kim Guise, Jonas Woost, Ravinder Minhas, Mathew Embry and Laura O’ Grady. 
  • SEVEN24 Films is nominated for Best Cross-Platform Project – Fiction for Wynonna Earp.
  • Upcoming Story Summit Speaker Patrick McGuire was nominated for two CSA’s for Best Original Program and Best Immersive Experience with VICE Media. (See more on Story Summit here)

“Artist to Watch” Evette Vargas heads to Alberta

AMPIA and The Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity welcome Evette Vargas as a presenter to Story Summit 2017. The half day workshop for Premium Pass holders will outline the top strategies to funding and selling new media content in Hollywood, breakdown all the misconceptions, and what content is desirable and why.

Named by the New York Times as an “Artist to Watch,” Vargas is an award-winning writer, director, producer, multiplatform and Virtual Reality creator. Vargas’ work includes series for Amazon, MTV, Bravo, DirectTV; as well as writing, apps, games and branded entertainment for FAST & FURIOUS, LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy and Madonna. Vargas executive produced, wrote and directed her digital series DARK PROPHET, starring Henry Rollins. The series was nominated for two Emmys, premiered at Sundance and is available on Amazon Prime. The Virtual Reality series will premiere on the Sony PlayStation VR and on LeVR in China.
