Calgary Feature Debuts at TIFF

The Alberta feature film The Valley Below will make it’s début at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) early next week. Producer Cameron Macgowan says the team at North Country Cinemas is pumped! “It’s just the boost the movie needed.”

The Valley Below is a continuing narrative of the award-winning short film Not Far From The Abattoir, that won Best Short at the Calgary and Edmonton International Film Festivals. The short film’s writer/director Kyle Thomas also picked up a Rosie Award for Best Screenwriter at the Alberta Film & Television Awards in 2012.

Cameron explains that the success of the short film and the opportunity to work with actor/singer-songwriter Kris Demeanor again was a factor in pushing forward with a feature film. The team was then awarded the Telefilm Micro-Budget Grant after being recommended by a jury through the Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers.

Cameron is confident that TIFF is just the beginning. “I don’t think living in Alberta limits your ability to [have your film] play around the world. “

Congrats to everyone at North Country Cinemas!
