Film Development Program changes accelerated to stimulate industry activity in Alberta.
New program takes effect December 1
New grant options within the Alberta Film Development Program announced mid-November will become effective on December 1, 2009, to advance activity in the film, television and digital media industry.
These additional entry points for accessing grants were originally slated to become effective on April 1, 2010.
In discussions with industry representatives after the November 12 announcement, we have moved up the date when applications will be accepted to December 1, said Lindsay Blackett, Minister of Culture and Community Spirit. Doing this provides a stimulus to the industry now, helping them move forward this year with new, quality projects that provide jobs for Albertans working in the industry while enhancing our local economy.
The new grant streams, created within the existing film development program, were developed to encourage the production of stories that are Albertan in content and expression; assist Alberta producers and writers in creating marketable, production-ready projects and scripts; help local producers sell, market and create business relationships in national and international markets; and support the next generation of producers, filmmakers and technical personnel through workshops, courses and mentoring programs. Up to $800,000 from the existing program budget will be allocated to support these streams.
The Alberta Film Development Program provides funding support for the development of a strong Alberta production industry. Payments to eligible productions are based on budget, Alberta ownership, in-province spend and other factors, to a maximum of $5 million. The program encourages development of local production expertise and talent; sustained industry development; increased investment in Alberta-based production; and the use of Alberta as an international film location.
