AMPIA’s 3rd Annual Professional Development Day will be held at the Shaw Theatre (11762 – 106 street) this Saturday March 19 from 9am – 6:30pm. March Madness is one-day workshop where participants from all over the province gather to meet with local representatives from Alberta’s unions, guilds, funding agencies and keynote speakers making a big impact in the industry.
This year AMPIA welcomes TELUS Optik Local as a presenting partner. The morning sessions include a panel of industry leaders from The National Film Board, Alberta Media Fund and Canadian Media Producers Association. Representatives from TELUS Optik’s STORYHIVE will be talking about new grants available to Alberta content creators. ACTRA Alberta will be presenting a session on working with union actors on a low budget, as well as co-sponsoring the closing reception.
Nicole Matiation from On Screen Manitoba will discuss how Alberta production companies can access funding for consultant fees and professional services to expand their business.
Derek Heisler, from Derek Heisler Photography, will be presenting a special session on “How To Inspire an Audience to See Your Film.”
Representatives from WIFTA, APPA, IATSE and DOC Alberta will be present to discuss their associations and the support they provide to the industry.
Toronto-based Producer and Digital Content Strategist Victoria Evans will deliver the morning keynote, sharing high level strategies in her session “Designing Content for Your Digital Audience.”
The creative team from Mosaic Entertainment, including Writer/Actor Chris Craddock, will be sharing insight on Edmonton’s cross-platform comedy Tiny Plastic Men, recently nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for Best Comedy Series.
The afternoon keynote will be presented by award-winning Producer Adam Scorgie, best known for his documentary The Culture High, which was long-listed for the Academy Awards and was released in 70 countries around the world. Adam will be showing clips from his latest projects Ice Guardians, Chasing Evel: The Life of Robbie Knievel, and his latest project with legendary Latino actor Danny Trejo (Machete, Planet Terror).

The Global Visions Film Festival premieres the highly anticipated documentary, The Culture High, on Wednesday, October 8th in Edmonton. Director Brett Harvey and Edmonton Producer Adam Scorgie reunite on this follow up of their hit documentary, The Union: The Business Behind Getting High, to delve deeper into the controversial ‘War on Drugs’.
