This year’s nominees were announced on Tuesday, April 17.
Press conferences were held at 1 PM at the Global Business Centre (Terrace View Room, 5th floor, 136 8th Ave SE – access through TELUS Convention Centre, North Building) in Calgary and Metro Cinema (8712 109 St) in Edmonton. AMPIA also announced that the Award for the Student Category has been renamed the Fil Fraser Award for Best Student Production, to honour the Alberta filmmaker who passed away last year. Also, a Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Bonnie Thompson of the National Film Board of Canada.
A total of 686 class and craft entries were submitted this year. These productions, from commercials, new media, and both long and short form fiction and non-fiction are vying for 27 Class awards. In addition, Alberta’s talented screenwriters, costume and production designers, cinematographers, editors, directors, make-up artists, special effects artists, sound technicians, composers and other craftspeople (totaling 193 finalists) are competing in 33 Craft categories. Each winner receives the prestigious Rosie Award.
To honour the legacy of a great Alberta filmmaker, the award for best student film will be renamed the Fil Fraser Award for Best Student Production, while Bonnie Thompson will be given a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of her outstanding career, including decades of work with the National Film Board of Canada.
Tickets are now available for the 44th Annual Rosie Awards Gala, celebrating one hundred years of film in Alberta. This year’s ceremony, honouring the best in Alberta’s film and television industries, will take place on Saturday, May 12 at the Hyatt Regency (700 Centre St S) in Calgary. The evening will begin with the Rosie Reception at 5:00 PM in the Foyer of the Imperial Ballroom at the Hyatt, followed by a gala dinner and award ceremony starting at 6:30. The regular meal is beef tenderloin with a red wine jus, wild rice pilaf, green beans and roasted heirloom tomatoes; the salad is chef’s blend of micro and petit greens, heirloom tomato, cucumber, pickled onion and white balsamic vinaigrette. The vegetarian option is a potato gnocchi with wild mushroom, baby kale, baby carrots, blistered tomato and garlic salad. Both meals are gluten-free. Complete menu here!
