Canadian Heritage Minister Melanie Joly recently stopped by the Varscona Theatre in Edmonton to share her vision of Creative Canada, including a Cultural Export Strategy. Minister Joly praised AMPIA for ‘leading the way’ with our Trade and Investment Attraction Mission to China, and invited AMPIA to also participate in the Cultural Trade Mission she will be leading to China in April. Calgary Dust Up: A Roundup

The 3rd Annual Calgary Dust Up is in the books! Over 100 students and Industry professionals signed up for the industry Information session. Speakers included Erin O’Connor from the Calgary Film Centre, Luke Azevedo from CED, and Rob Hilton from DGC-Alberta who shared their extensive knowledge about working in Southern Alberta. Scott Westby gave a very engaging talk about how to start your own company, Tina Alford spoke about how to engage ACTRA, and Dylan Pearce spoke about how to break into the Biz after film school. The afternoon wrapped up with a networking reception, sponsored by ACTRA-Alberta.

Edmonton Film Prize deadline October 27

The Edmonton Film Prize is a $10,000 annual cash prize to celebrate excellence in Edmonton’s screen-based community. The prize is intended for any narrative, documentary or experimental project with special consideration to any filmmakers who have made a unique contribution or outstanding accomplishment in the community.

Launched in 2012 by the Edmonton Arts Council, the Edmonton Film Prize was created to celebrate the best in Edmonton’s screen-based industries. Three winners will be awarded ($8,000 first place and two $1,000 runners up).

Submission deadline for the 2018 Prize is Friday, October 27, 2017.

Doing Business in Shanghai Workshop

Weldon Epp, Canada’s Consul General to Shanghai spoke to AMPIA members last week, sharing with them an in-depth overview of Canada’s new approach to Culture and Export to China. Mr. Epp shared a high-level overview of the challenges and opportunities of seeking export or investment opportunities in Shanghai.

AMPIA Annual General Meeting

AMPIA will hold its Annual General Meeting on Saturday October 21, from 10am-11:30am at the ACAD Board Room (new room change) at the Alberta College of Art & Design in Calgary (1407 – 14th Ave NW). All members are welcome to attend. Members will vote on a Slate of Directors, which will be sent out to the membership at least two weeks prior to the AGM. Also on the agenda will be approval of the 2016-17 Financial Statements, appointment of Auditors and proposed changes to our Bylaws regarding term limits for Board members. A copy of the proposed Bylaw changes can be found HERE (see page 5, article 3.6.1).

AMPIA is seeking a Communications and Membership Coordinator to join our team here in Edmonton.
Responsibilities will include:


  • Updating the AMPIA website on a weekly basis;
  • Writing, editing & layout of the weekly Members’ Newsletter;
  • Writing Media Releases and maintaining Media Relations;
  • Disseminating information about the Association & Member benefits;
  • Marketing of the Association including advertising as needed;
  • Maintaining Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.);
  • Additional communications tasks as required.


  • Assisting with AMPIA Members’ inquiries including processing Membership applications and renewals;
  • Management of Membership database and Newsletter databases;
  • Assisting with duties related to all AMPIA events, including the Rosie Awards, Story Summit and other Professional Development and Networking events;
  • Answering inquiries arising from mail, e-mail, phone, and in-person visits;
  • Additional administrative tasks as required.


  • Excellent verbal, written and editorial communication skills.
  • Comprehensive understanding of digital communications tools and practices.
  • Demonstrated success working collaboratively with a diverse team that includes multiple partners.
  • Ability to respond well to pressure in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Self-motivated, creative thinker with outstanding troubleshooting, analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Word Press and Social Media.
  • Familiarity with graphic design software an asset.

Mr. Epp will share his unique insights and experience on the opportunities for Canadian businesses in China’s fast-growing economy, including the evolving trade and investment landscape in film, television and interactive digital media. After the presentation, Mr. Epp will answer questions and there will be a short networking session.

Weldon Epp (BTh, Canadian Mennonite Bible College, 1991; BA [History], University of Manitoba, 1995) joined the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade in 1996 as a foreign service officer, working first with the China and Mongolia Division and the Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs Division. In Ottawa, Mr. Epp has also served in the Assignments Division and as director of the Policy Research Division. Abroad, he served in Beijing as second secretary and vice-consul, in Taipei as director (political/economic), in Jakarta as counsellor (political/economic) and, on short assignments, in Geneva, Islamabad and Phnom Penh. Prior to the current posting, Mr. Epp served as Canadian Consul General in Guangzhou, China.

Showcase Alberta: Up Close & Interactive with Wyonna Earp

Attention all Earpers! Get behind the scenes of Alberta’s hit series Wyonna Earp at this special fan event on September 30 at the Calgary International Film Festival.

The Calgary-produced and Alberta-shot sci-fi phenomenon that’s been garnering attention around the globe since its debut in spring 2016. Focusing on the titular character as she learns to dispatch demons, revenants, evil spirits, and more, the series has amassed a cult following of “Earpers”, leading to a renewal for the third season to be broadcast in 2018.

Get up close and personal with the cast and creators of the show, where they’ll be offering behind-the-scenes stories, entertaining insights and little-known facts about the show to diehard fans. The event will be live-streamed for those who can’t make it, with a Q&A session to answer all your burning questions.
